Fishing Charters
Port Renfrew harbors one of the most exclusive fishing grounds in British Columbia. With limited accommodations, one small marina, and no major resorts or lodges, Port Renfrew is quiet, comfortable and friendly, the ideal place for companionship around an open fire, exchanging tall tales and living them.
The fishing here compares with the most remote and legendary fishing locations in British Columbia. If you have ever experienced overcrowded conditions at highly publicized fishing destinations, Port Renfrew is a welcome change. To our benefit, Port Renfrew has managed to elude the wheels of progress.
Halibut Fishing
Famous halibut grounds surround Port Renfrew. To the south, Sombrio Point and Jordan River are very unique due to their shallow waters, which provide ideal conditions for halibut trolling. To the north are found Carmanah Point and Swiftsure Banks. Swiftsure Banks is considered one of the most productive halibut grounds in the world. Typically you will catch limits of 20 to 50 lb Halibut from the 1st of June onward; larger Halibut are often found laying on lesser populated humps in nearby waters. Daily limits for Halibut are two fish. The halibut record at Port Renfrew is 240 pounds.
Salmon Fishing
The Chinook salmon season in Port Renfrew is long and steady. Located at the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca we are able to target multiple runs of salmon as they feed heavily for their last big push to the rivers. In addition we also have our own quality runs of Chinook and Coho feeding out front before entering the San Juan and NitiNat rivers. Coho salmon fishing is busy from season start to finish, and what a finish you can have with our big San Juan fish, Port Renfrew hosts a record 30 lb Coho and lots of big teeners fighting just as hard and actively as their 12 lb little brothers.
Our Charters
This is the real thing! On our Vancouver Island fishing charters, we catch quality fish and lots of them. Our experience, pursuit of excellence and work ethic out-fishes the competition. Seasoned guides will ensure your success using proven techniques developed and perfected exclusively on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
- We catch fish using quality light equipment by Shimano, Daiwa, Penn and Delta. Our gear is replaced each season; reels are relined regularly and maintained daily.

- Trailhead Resort has 3 custom-designed, welded-aluminum vessels built by Silver Streak Boats of Vancouver Island for Vancouver Island fishing. Chartering one of our boats is a rewarding fishing expedition.
Our boats are comfortably outfitted with large heated cabins, enclosed marine toilets and satellite stereos.

Each of our Vancouver Island fishing charter boats fit 4 guests along with their highly qualified captain/fishing guide. We can book groups of 4, 8 and 12 people and if you come as a group of 12, you’ll have the whole fleet and lodge to yourself.
